ABSTRACT
This study generally analysis the semantics analysis of the meaning component of Edo riddles and jokes. It aims to investigate the semantic analysis of Edo riddles and jokes for better understanding of meaning and cultural significance. It also accounted for the role of humor in shaping cultural identity and social interaction. By exploring the linguistic and cultural factors that shape the use of humor in Edo culture, this study will provide new insights into the relationship between language, culture, and meaning. To achieve this, the researcher used the tenet of speech act theory by J.L.Austin to analyze some riddles and jokes, Data for the research was gotten from oral interviews, recorded audio from native speaker of the language and secondary source (Literature books) . The study revealed that most responses gotten for the questions asked in form of riddles can’t be scientifically proven. Most responses are based of conventional agreement from language users.
