ABSTRACT
In the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education, the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in academia has gained considerable attention. This qualitative research project embarks on an indepth exploration of EI within the Faculty of Management Science at the esteemed University of Benin, situated in the vibrant academic landscape of Nigeria. Grounded in a qualitative methodology, primarily utilizing face-to-face semi-structured interviews as the principal mode of data collection, this study delves into the multifaceted dimensions of emotional intelligence among academics. The study aimed to understand how faculty members perceive, apply, and acknowledge emotional intelligence in their roles as educators, researchers, and administrators. Through in-depth face-to-face semi structured interviews, a rich tapestry of insights emerged, revealing the multifaceted nature of EI among academics. Participants shared their experiences, perspectives, and reflections on emotional intelligence, offering a nuanced view of its significance in their professional lives. The research identifies and dissects various dimensions of emotional intelligence as they are understood and practiced by academics. These dimensions include self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and interpersonal relationships, each playing a distinct role in shaping the dynamics of the academic environment. Furthermore, the study investigates the specific challenges and opportunities faced by faculty members within the Faculty of Management Science, shedding light on how emotional intelligence impacts their 15 teaching methodologies, research endeavors, and administrative responsibilities. Findings from this research highlight the strengths and areas for growth in emotional intelligence within the academic community. They emphasize the importance of cultivating emotional intelligence skills, not only for the personal and professional development of academics but also for the overall well-being of students and the quality of education provided. In conclusion, this project underscores the pivotal role of emotional intelligence in the Faculty of Management Science at the University of Benin, Nigeria, and emphasizes its potential to positively influence the academic landscape and the holistic growth of its stakeholders.
