A PSYCHOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGE DISORDER OF TWO SELECTED STAMMER PATIENTS

ABSTRACT

This research, A Psycholinguistic Analysis of Language Disorder in Two Selected Stammer Patients aims at identifying the types, causes, and triggers for stammering in the two selected stammer patients, and also identifying the impacts stammering has on the two stutterers. The research applied Zebrowski’s (2003) comprehensive typology of disfluency in classifying the types of stuttering behaviours, and for the causes, reasons, and triggers, the theory of the START stuttering (2017) was applied, and for analyzing the impacts it has on the stammer patients, the theory of Levelt’s psycholinguistic model of speech production was referenced. The method of data collection used was the qualitative descriptive method. The main instrument of this research is the researcher himself. The data of this research was taken from two selected stammer patients in form of audio recordings. The work ascertained that the most frequent type of stuttering occurrences in the two stammer patients was repetition. It also ascertained that of all the five stuttering behaviours portrayed in the research, the stammer patients only expressed four; repetition, sound prolongation, blocks, and interjection, with circumlocution not be expressed at all. This research hence serves as a resourceful material for future consultation to the study or analysis of stutter or stammer patients, to find out the types of occurences, causes, triggers, and impacts stuttering has on the lives of the stutterers themselves.
