ABSTRACT

This work is a proposed dictionary of Ogwashi-Uku, it is a bilingual dictionary which goes to say that there are two languages in it; the Ogwashi-uku and English Language respectively; the words were given in the Ogwashi-uku language and the meaning and description was giving in English.

The aim of this work is to document the language spoken by the Ogwashi-Uku people through a list of their words in order for it to be reserved and not die out and also it is important to note that before now, their language has been endangered. The theoretical framework used for this study was the best suited for it, it is called language documentation, which according to some authors is the best answer to language endangerment.

The motivation for this work arose from the fact that Dialectal Dictionaries are not common and so when there is a dictionary for the accepted standard dialect of a language the other dialects are not looked at or worked on, most of the time it leads to their endangerment and subsequent death, and also the accepted standard dialect most times differ from the other dialects of the language in very amazing ways, which are not negligible.

In this work it was found that the language worked on had vowel clusters which overtime has been laid that African languages do not have this type of typology, but this work in this language has been able to expose this finding.

To the field of linguistics this work would go a long way, it can serve as a pedagogic material, a reference material and would be helpful. If there is need for a comparative analysis to be done in the language in general, it can also be helpful to language learners and users in general.

Finally, the following recommendations would be helpful, more attention should be paid to dialects and varieties studies, lexicography should be encouraged and taught in higher institutions of linguistics learning.
