ABSTRACT
This study identifies and examines the different slangy expressions used in the movie series, ‘Selina Tested’. Slangy expressions are a type of informal language that is often used by specific groups of people, such as teenager, criminals, or musicians. They are often characterized by their use of new words and phrases, as well as their creative and innovative use of existing words. The study investigates the use of these slangy expressions by different characters in the movie series ‘Selina Tested’ to mean. This research is done through the use of the Qualitative Research Methodology and the Relevance Theory of Dan Sperber and Deidre Wilson. The collection of data is done by thoroughly viewing and analyzing the movie series from episodes 1-20. A total of 59 (fifty-nine) slangy expressions were analyzed based on their contextual meanings. The findings of the research reveal that slangy expressions are a means of portraying unity, oneness and a cultural identity and the usage of these slangs (especially those from the subject of focus ‘Selina Tested’) play a very significant role in the lives of the Nigerian populace at large. These expressions are capable of influencing Nigerians both positively and negatively.
