ABSTRACT
Slang and catchy phrases are used in hip-hip to reduce vulgarity, increase acceptability and avoid stating directing the referent name. This study aims to analyze slang and catchy phrases in some selected Nigerian hip-hop songs, focusing on their real meaning and their contribution to the singers intended meaning. In carrying out this research, four Nigerian hip-hop songs are selected as data within which sixteen slang expressions were extracted. Lawals (1997) model of “Aspect of Pragmatics Theory” was adopted in the analysis of these slangs/catchy phrases. The findings allow us to identify the reasons for the employment of slangs in hip-hop songs, and also their contribution to the overall meaning of the song.
