ABSTRACT
This work is a pragmatic analysis of Ibusa greeting terms. It is the aim of this study to show the different greeting terms used in the Ibusa community. Hence it is carried out within the frame work of pragmatics. Data collected for the purpose of this study was by means of a tape recorder and analyzed using the Speech Acts theory of J.L Austin (1962). This theoretical frame work guided in unveiling the intended meanings and expression of the greeting terms used in Ibusa which formed the focus of this work. The findings revealed in this study shows that these greeting terms are used to depict wealth, strength and bravery. It’s intention of been used is to praise, hail or admire.
This work would not only serve as a documentary evidence for these greeting terms but also serve as a research material to native and non – native speakers of Ibusa.
