ABSTRACT

This study is concerned with carrying out a pragmatic analysis on figurative expression in Awka dialect, Nigeria. In igbo society as in many others, figurative expressions plays role in culture and society. The case study of this research are proverbs, metaphor and idioms. As discovered in the study, the proverbs is dominant among the elders with which they use in between sentences to pass across message of different kinds like proverb of advice, proverb of instruction, descriptive proverbs, warning proverbs. Metaphor are explored through the concept of context as an analytical framework to examine social functions performed by the figure of speech (metaphor)The 8 study employed Mey's (2001) speech act theory using the locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary act. The method of data collection is oral interview and a total of 30 figurative expressions were collected. The work which is divided into 5 sections comprises of introduction, literature review, methodology, data presentation and analysis, conclusion.
