ABSTRACT

This work analyses various emoticons used in social media, stating how digital communication differs from face-to-face interaction and how these emoticons improve the quality of communication. With the deployment of qualitative methodology, guided by Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory, it portrays the essence of these emoticons on social media and the role they play in vocabulary development and communication in general. Through its comprehensive exploration, this research left no room for doubts that there are tons of positive sides to the use of emoticons as well as revealed the concerning prevalence of the wrong use of emoticons and by understanding the meaning of emoticons, we can better understand the ways in which online communication differs from face-to-face interaction.
