ABSTRACT
There have been series of arguments in the past, that the quest for a unique ideology that binds the African people together is in a subtle nature was quite lacking in their (Africans) clamouring for recognition of a unique philosophy devoid of western influence. It is against this backdrop that an ideology so to speak of, simply speaks of' a manner or the content of thinking characteristic of an individual, group, or culture' which was quite lacking in the psychological nature of the African people from time in antiquity till the period of the nationalist development in the quest for freedom and emancipation from the colonial domain. This is not to claim that there hasn't been a quest for such, but not in the form of an ideology so to speak, that aims to bind a group of people in a quest to achieve a particular goal. It is on this note that this study examines the socialist populist ideology of Julius Kambarage Nyerere on Ujamaa (brotherhood) of Tanzanian which is structured on an economical aim that binds the people together. In the words of Kwame Nkurumahinhis essays towards colonial freedom, he examined that the basis of independence is for a total emancipation from colonization which is indispensable and a step for economic control. The end goal of this ideology given by Nyerere was to break off the shackles of colonization and the aftermath of it to a dependency on the country's economic ego. This study will also examine the struggle of Ujamaa as a catalyst for national unity as well as its pros and con in its quest for a unique ideology.
