ABSTRACT
This study examined the nature of grammatical relations in Igarra. The study was motivated by the need to account for the nature grammatical categories in Igarra, their semantic features and morphological features or relation. In the realization of well-formed sentences in the language. The study outlined, the modalities for the identification and classification of different grammatical categories. It also accounted for the nature of agreement between lexical and functional categories as units of grammatical categories. The data on the grammatical categories employed for analysis in this study where collected primarily through personal communication and intuitive knowledge while others were extracted from secondary sources such as books written in Igarra language. The method of analysis employed was the descriptive method as used in Dixon and Alkhenvald (2004) and Baker (2004) in the description of words classes in natural languages. The study showed that grammatical relations constitutes on important unit of the nature of the grammar of a language and accounts for the internal organization of the constituents of any clause. The study also showed that what is commonly known as grammatical categories consists of three-categories: lexical, functional and inflectional. The study further showed the significant roles played by these elements in setting the boundary between a phrase and a sentence as well as between different form of a sentence.
