ABSTRACT
This study seeks to discover how the Ẹdo speaking people view common concepts through a morpho-semantic study of lexical items (verb). It is my conviction that an accurate description of the semantic elements and the internal structure of the lexemes of a language can lead to discovering the ways in which the native speaker of any speech community view and interprets the world.
In other to achieve this, the data for the research was obtained from competent native speakers, where the language is predominantly spoken. This was complemented by information generated from published and unpublished literatures on the view of study. The data was analyzed based on their compositions as lexical units, and their distributions in any construction using varying descriptive strategies.
Evidence from the data shown in the study reveals that a verb can combine both word with verbal and nominal traits in the computation and derivation of an event in the language. This study identifies and described the basic semantic particles which are relevant in the derivation of verbal complexes in Ẹdo. In conclusion, the study agrees that these morpho-semantic and phonological units which are basically verbal derivatives and suffixes, contributes in a distinct way to verb meaning which eventually affect the event meaning.
