ABSTRACT
Stylistics is an aspects of linguistic insights and it involves the application of linguistic choice to the study of literature known as linguistic stylistics that is, The concept of linguistic stylistics has to do with a stylistic study that relies heavily on the ‘scientific rules’ of language in its analysis. The study is focused on the linguistic analysis of satirical songs in Afikpo Igbo, in Afikpo North Local Government of Ebonyi state. The motivation for this study is to preserve, this oral tradition for the younger and future generation to come. The major source of data collection for this study is fieldwork. And a total of 32 two satirical songs were collected. Some aspects of Niazi & Gautam’s (2010) framework, as well as Onwukwe’s (2012) concept of foregrounded irregularities at the lexical, syntactic and semantic levels were adopted in the analysis of the data collected from a selection of deviant words and structures . Finding show that, at the lexico-semamtic level, a functional conversion of a meaning clearly violate the norms of a language. Afikpo Igbo satirical songs displays deviations at the interrelated levels of linguistic description. But in this study, the syntactical and leico-semantics will be discussed. Finding show that, at the lexico-semamtic level, a functional conversion of a meaning clearly violate the norms of a language. Also at lexico-semamtic level, meaning is foregrouned and bring about either metaphor, (using. 'bú'. "Is") simile (using 'ká' " like") or personification(using rhetorical question to inanimate). e data collected was translated from the source language Afikpo dialect to the target language (English language). Using the Four level translation on the data used for data analysis, free translation was given to the remaining data all by M. K. Uwajeh (2007).
