ABSTRACT

This research attempts a Linguistics Investigation On the Impact of CMC On Linguistic Diversity. The work unfolds linguistic features of CMC and its impact on linguistic diversity. The theoretical framework used to carry out this work is the ‘Uses and Gratification Theory”. The methodology of this research is qualitative design and data collection employed is secondary data. The data for the study where obtained from online sources and Web scrapping of discussions on the online platform like WhatsApp or Facebook coupled with texts, journals and articles. The findings of the study CMC features can be generalized and can be categorized into different linguistic features like shortenings, alpha numeric and vowel deletions.  CMC features can be generalized and can be categorized into different linguistic features like shortenings, alpha numeric and vowel deletions. This shows how these words are arrived at and built. CMC serves as a ground for linguistic forms, informal registers to be used in online spaces with digital users been creative with new abbreviations, slangs and conveying them efficiently. The researcher recommends that more studies are carried on the compounding processes and more on the circumfix part of morphology on CMC.
