ABSTRACT
This linguistic study examines the importance of Nigerian Pidgin in Afro Pop, taking a closer look at the language choices made by artists. While it has been recognized that language affects musical identity, the specific impact of Nigerian Pidgin on Afro Pop has not been studied much. This research takes a different approach than previous studies that focus on language trends, by exploring the unique linguistic features and cultural influences of Nigerian Pidgin in Afro Pop music. This research stands out from other studies by taking a deep dive into how Nigerian Pidgin is used in Afro Pop, instead of focusing solely on the sociocultural effects of the genre or the linguistic analysis of specific African languages. Even though Nigerian Pidgin has been recognized has a unifying language among diverse Nigerian ethnicities, not a lot of academic research has been done on how it is used in Afro Pop. Furthermore, our study incorporates a straight up analysis of Nigerian Pidgin in Afro Pop with its usage in other artistic mediums and there is no theoretical framework for it. We gathered a bunch of Afro Pop songs that use Nigerian Pidgin, and took a close look at the lyrics to see how the language shapes the genre's character. We expect to find out how the specific language choices in these songs create a unique sound and identity for Afro Pop. Basically, our findings show that Nigerian Pidgin is a big deal in Afro Pop, making the lyrics more real and more relatable. It also shows how language and music work together to reflect artists' identities and audience preferences. All this helps us understand how language shapes creativity and strengthens the idea that language and culture are connected. In conclusion, this study shows that Nigerian Pidgin is super important in Afro Pop, and helps create unique and creative lyrics. By diving deep into language choices in Afro pop, we see how culture and art play a big role in how artists express themselves. This research is valuable for understanding both language and music, and also has bigger implications for the impact of language mixing in global music.
