ABSTRACT

Language is seen as a method of communication utilizing symbols like words and gestures to represent meanings. It encompasses rules and patterns that allow people to generate and understand messages, enabling the conveyance of thoughts, emotions, and concepts. Linguistics examines different elements of language, such as its phonetics, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, in order to comprehend language mechanics and its diverse applications. Errors in conversation can be inhibitions towards the exchange and decoding of messages. This research describes errors on some selected Yoruba videos subtitled in English. Errors have been extracted from four Yoruba movies subtitled in English and had been numbered as attested in every film. The movies which are Akitan, Awele, Onika and Mama Landlady. Error analysis is then carried out on them. That is, the error had been identified, classified into their types, giving an explanation for why such errors have been made and corrections have been proffered where necessary. The researcher found out that the most important reasons of these errors has been inter-lingual and intra-lingual transfer. The research also observed that mistakes can result to break-down in conversation in Yoruba movies to non-Yoruba viewers and in general. From these findings, the researcher stated that some of the error that occur in Yoruba film subtitled in English are found guilty of inflicting inhibitions in the ideal perception of the message embedded in these Yoruba videos to non- Yoruba viewers.
