ABSTRACT

Language is the principle method of human communication, consisting of words used in structured and conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing, or gesture. The forms and functions of any language vary systematically, not only according to geography, but also in synchrony with social levels, cultural uses, and various communicative functions. This work examines the descriptive analysis of slang used in motor parks. Slang is generally considered as informal style of speech which is used by groups of people in particular community. It is a part of language that is usually outside of conventional or standard usage and that may consist of both newly coined words and phrases, and of new and extended meanings attached to existing terms. The data generated for the purpose of this work was gotten directly from informants at the motor park. The theoretical framework adopted for this work is Dixon Basic Linguistic Theory (1997).This work examines how slang expressions are coined from existing words and the social and cultural reasons for these new forms of expressions. It also examines the linguistic process involved in slang formation and the function of slang in the motor parks and society at large.
