ABSTRACT
This study examined a descriptive analysis of Ideophones in Isoko. It sought to arrive at logical assumptions of what Ideophones truly are and currently are in the language.
This work was carried out to reveal the nature of ideophones and the challenges of usage by Isoko speakers. Therefore the problem it sought to address using some aspect of the linguistic features is the morphological and phonological processes involved in the formation of ideophones in Isoko, its structure as well as the meaning ideophones tend to depict in the language.
This work employed two methods of data collection; the primary and the secondary data collection and the choice of these data collection method is to ensure that the work draws from a wide range of ideophonic situation in the language. In the course of this work, a vivid definition was given from the father of ideophones; Doke (1935), other definitions were given by several other scholars like Bodomo (2006), Awoyale (1983) and a host of many others.
In the phonological aspect which was discussed in chapter 3, it was discovered that ideophones in the language can be monosyllabic, disyllabic, as well as can be polysyllabic, it was discovered during the course of this work also that ideophones are mainly characterized by adjectives etc. In the morphological aspect, which was discussed in chapter 4, it was discovered that the only morphological process that characterized the ideophone is reduplication.
In conclusion, the compilation of this work, aims to serve as bedrock to create room for further studies and also serve as an aid to expand linguistic study.
