ABSTRACT
There can be no discourse on knowledge without knowing the means of communicating this knowledge. Language is the means of communicating knowledge. Though, often regarded as a philosophical concern , the problem of language as it related to our physical world has always remain a parental one, which is traceable right from the earliest time. Different scholars and philosopher have given different views on the concept of language and these views tend to conflict.
This research adopts the method of analysis. Analysis simply means the breaking down of things to pieces and re-assembly of things in whole. This research, however, attempts to analyse the theory of language given by Wittgenstein. It gives an overview of the concept of language and philosophy of language, then a brief insight of the theory of language given by other philosophers and then an analysis of Ludwig Wittgenstein theories of language, the picture theory (1921) also the “tractatus logico philosophicus” and the language game theory (`953). The concept of this two theories is analytic in the sense that his first theory was criticized by his second theory.
In this research, the connection of his two theories to the world at large would be examines and explained since his language theory was an avenue to answer the metaphysical question and also questions regarding linguistics. In my findings, this research will be able to raise a full view on Ludwig Wittgenstein’s language theory. With the use of critical analytic method, these theories were critically evaluated
