ABSTRACT
The landscape of philosophical ideas or discussions has undergone a significant shift in the contemporary stage of philosophy. Overtime, it has evolved through various periods, from the early Greeks to the Medieval era, and finally to the contemporary stage. Presently, there is a noteworthy focus on humanity, where scholars prioritize understanding the nature of ‘Man’ rather than solely exploring transcendental concepts. It is within this epoch of philosophical development that “Existentialist philosophy” emerged. Previously, metaphysics chiefly dealt with abstract entities rather than the human experience, as over the ages, philosophers have predominantly directed their attention towards the ontology of the cosmos, giving little consideration to the human condition. Hence, it is after the Second World War, this philosophical movement aimed to establish the profound uniqueness of the human individual, where it centers on human existence, individual experience and the essence of being. Jean-Paul Sartre, one of its prominent pioneers, challenged traditional philosophical ideas by asserting that humans are not merely determined by external forces, like the essentialists believed, but are rather responsible for shaping their own lives through their choices and actions. Sartre’s existential ideas have had a profound impact on the philosophical landscape and continue to inspire discussions on human autonomy and agency. Hence, this project centered on elucidating Sartre’s ideas as well as carefully analysing and subjecting it to thorough scrutiny.
