ABSTRACT
Women have contributed immensely to national development in Nigeria since precolonial era. The case is not different from the post-colonial era where democracy building and sustenance have become the norm. They have demonstrated their capacity to contribute to democratic sustenance in Nigeria through available positions afforded them. Those in the legislature have moved various nation-building motions and bills and ensured their implementations while those in other political positions have also made their marks through collaboration, mobilization and support. However, as much as women have contributed to democracy in Nigeria, they have often faced economic, social, political and environmental challenges. It was against this backdrop that the study set out to critically evaluate the role of women in politics and democratic sustenance during the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. The study set to achieve three objectives: to evaluate the role(s) women played in Nigerian democratic sustenance during 2023 General Elections; to understand factors that limited women’s overall participation in democratic sustenance in Nigeria during 2023 General Elections; and to proffer solutions that can enhance women’s roles in democratic sustenance in Nigeria. The study was a qualitative research, relying on existing secondary materials such as books, articles, media prints and documents. The study found that women contributed to democratic sustenance in 2023 general elections in Nigeria through mobilization, sensitization, voting and aspiring for various elective positions. It was also found that the women were also limited by challenges such as patriarchy, monetization of politics, identity politics and lack of support from their fellow women. The study therefore recommended that laws should be made to affirm 35% women inclusion in both elective and appointed positions. In addition, proper investigation should be conducted for various inhumane acts against women during the elections and those found culpable should be made to face the law. The study recommended that women should form a common front in order to stand a chance against their male counterparts while the government reduces the volume of money in politics to reduce electoral violence during elections in Nigeria.
