ABSTRACT
This study is entitled the Contrastive Analysis of three Semantic fields of English and Yoruba. The three semantic fields are; Kinship terms, Seasons and greetings. The research adopted the word list employed in Filani (2013) for data collection and some questions were developed by the researcher to interview competent Yoruba speakers. Using the framework of linguistic relativism, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the area of similarities and the differences between the two languages has been identified, the different ways the Yoruba and English people use their kinship terms, seasons and greetings terms and the implications that this have on the worldview was also identified. This study is significant because it showed the relationship between language and the thought pattern of the people. The study aim includes, high lighting the problems of second language learning.
Finally, it’s observed with the investigation and analysis of the data, that there are no cognates in both languages (English and Yoruba). And that the way Yoruba and English people perceive reality is based on the languages which supports sapir-whorf hypothesis. It could be concluded that concerning kinship terms and seasons, English and Yoruba people perceive reality differently but to an extent, their greeting concept is almost alike but not lexically.
