ABSTRACT
This study was entitled "A contrastive analysis of the Semantic field of Kinship and Greeting terms of Igbo and English language". The aim of this study was to highlight the greeting and kinship terminologies that were present in Igbo and English language respectively. Using the framework of linguistic relativism and determinisn, the Sapir Whorf hypothesis, the area of similarities and differences between the two languages was identified.
The different ways the Igbo and English people use their kinship terms and greeting terms and the implications this have on their worldview was also identified. This study was important because it showed the relationship between language and thought pattern of the people.
Finally, it was also observed that English and Igbo language have similarities as well as differences in their kinship and greeting system's respectively.
