ABSTRACT
This research is titled "a contrastive analysis of the semantic field of kinship and greeting terms in English and Igbo language. The aim of this study is to highlight and analyze the greeting and kinship terms in Igbo and English language. This research gives insight to the various ways in which the Igbo and English uses this term and the effects of these on their world view which shows the relationship between the language and the thought pattern of the people. The theoretical framework adopted for this research is the Sapir-whorf hypothesis and Dell Hyme's SPEAKING model which helped in comparing and contrasting the languages. The method of data collection used is the primary and secondary method. The primary method employed is the use of interview, the researcher gathered data from native speakers and personal acquittances and the secondary method is the use of corpus analysis where he gathered data from journal and media This research provides insight to the similarities and differences in the kinship and greetings system of the English and Igbo language. It will serve as a teaching material to language learners.
