ABSTRACT

Aesthetic which has beauty as its subject matter is an important phenomena in human life which cannot be ignored. This could either be understood from Western, Eastern or African perspective. Just like philosophy, aesthetic or it subject matter is culture relative. Western aesthetic appreciation can be said to be preserved in museums, whereas in African culture the objects of aesthetic appreciation takes it roots in what Placid Tempels called vital forces, the ontological structure which permeates everything. This serves as the foundation for communal values and practical reality of life. It is from this perspective that an attempt is made in this research to make a comparison between Western and Benin Aesthetical appreciation of the works of art and argues that there are differences in the mode of appreciating beauty and the works of art between the two climes.
