ABSTRACT
This study explores the comparative analysis of traditional and modern construction methodologies in Benin City, Nigeria, with an emphasis on techniques, materials, and sustainability practices. Benin City, known for its rich cultural heritage, has historically utilized traditional construction materials such as earth, clay, wood, and thatch, which are environmentally friendly and culturally significant. In contrast, modern construction methods involving concrete, steel, glass, and synthetic composites have gained prominence due to their durability and structural flexibility. The research extends to Lagos State, Nigeria's economic hub, which has experienced extensive use of both traditional and modern construction methodologies. By examining the construction practices in Lagos, the study aims to identify sustainable methods that can be adapted and integrated into Benin City's urban development. The primary objectives of this research include documenting and analyzing traditional and modern construction materials and techniques in both regions, evaluating their sustainability and cultural relevance and proposing strategies for harmonizing these methodologies to enhance sustainable urban development in Benin City. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research through case studies, surveys, and interviews with key stakeholders. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights for architects, urban planners, policymakers, and the local community, demonstrating how to preserve cultural heritage while embracing modern advancements for a sustainable future. Ultimately, this thesis aims to bridge the gap between traditional and modern construction practices, promoting urban development that respects cultural heritage and sustainability principles. The integration of best practices from Lagos into Benin City can serve as a model for other regions seeking to balance modernization with cultural preservation.
