ABSTRACT
Refractive error is the most common visual impairment seen worldwide. This is one of the main causes for which patients come to optometrists. Automated refractors and retinoscopes play crucial roles in assessing and diagnosing refractive errors thereby aiding eye care professionals in providing accurate prescriptions for corrective lenses. The procedure for accurate refractive error measurement involves objective and subjective refraction techniques. This observational study compared retinoscopy and auto-refraction measurements in adults and was carried out on 50 eyes (25 participants). Refractive measurements of each eye were taken using i-optik KR9000 auto-refractor and Keeler Streak Retinoscope. The data from this study was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0. Descriptive statistics (percentages, mean, frequency and standard deviation) was used to summarize and describe the characteristics of the study participants. The agreement between the categorical parameters was analyzed using the Bland-Altman Analysis. Linear regression was used to assess bias between the two clinical tools. The results showed that there is significant difference for myopia (p<0.05). However, hyperopia and mixed astigmatism showed no significant difference (p>0.05). In conclusion, there was significant difference in the overall refractive error measurement of the two devices (p=0.035) and auto-refractors tended to over-plus hyperopics and under minus myopics. As a recommendation, clinicians should be aware of these discrepancies and exercise caution when diagnosing and dispensing. KEYWORDS: Refractive error, Auto-refraction and Retinoscopy
