ABSTRACT
The lack of knowledge about blindness and its causes, has lead to the existence of various forms of social misconceptions about it. These misconceptions are either positive or negative and they influence an individual’s attitude towards blind people. An individual’s attitude can be influenced by their social environment and educational field. This study aimed to investigate the level of knowledge and attitude towards blindness among optometry students in different levels in the University of Benin. A total of 160 students gave their consent to participate in the study, of whom, 51(31.9%) were males and 109(68.1%) were females. Their age range spanned from 15-30 years. A self-administered questionnaire was given to each participant to answer questions on knowledge and attitude towards blindness. Chi square test was used to determine the association between the categories of variables such as age, gender and level of training. Results showed that all optometry students irrespective of their level had a good knowledge and attitude towards blindness. This means that they are well informed about this disability. It also showed that optometry students respect and understand the challenges faced by blind people and they are willing to provide the necessary support to ease their integration into society
