ABSTRACT

This work is a comparative study of Ado, Edo and Yoruba. This research focused on the examination of the similarities and differences across lexical items of Ado, Edo and Yoruba. The objective of the study is to establish the linguistic relationship Ado shares with Yoruba and Edo. The lexicostatistical framework was adopted as the theoretical framework, for the analysis of lexical items in these language groups. A test of mutual, intelligibility was carried out on the lexicostatistic result with the measurement of the international language assessment conference 1990. A dialect test based on this was carried out.

The data for our research were gotten from native speakers from the 3 language groups. The instrument for data collection was the Ibadan wordlist of 400 basic lexical items. The method of data collection was the direct interview of native speakers of these languages.

Results of this research showed that Ado is more closely related to Edo than it is to Yoruba. It remains a dialect of Edo this research has contributed to linguistic research by proposing a classification of Ado, based on scientific result.
