A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS' PERFORMANCE IN CIVICS AND SOCIAL STUDIES SUBJECTS IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ESTAKO EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The research study evaluated a comparative analysis of students' performance in Civics and Social Studies subjects in Junior Secondary Schools in Estako East Local Government Area of Edo State. Civics and Social Studies subjects are one of the major subject offered in the Junior Secondary Schools in Nigeria. Consequently, The differences in the performance of students in civics and social studies subjects in Junior Secondary Schools in Estako East Local Government Area of Edo State is examined. In view of this, the research design employed for this research is the correlational design this is so because the research aims at exploring the relationship between academic performance of students' in Social Studies and Civic Education, this method was adopted because the study was not a true experimental research. Consequently, the data collected was collated and quantitatively analyzed. The population of this study consisted of Five (5) Junior Secondary Schools in Estako East Local Government Area of Edo State. They are generally mixed schools. Results of students in civics and social studies were collated from each of the five schools within the period of 2016 to 2021 with the help of the principals and Civics and Social Studies teachers in the various school sampled. Collected raw data was edited for completeness and consistency. Data was analyzed by the use of simple percentage. The study discovered that the number of student who offered both Civics and Social Studies increased progressively in the years under review. The study found that Student interest in Civics and Social Studies subject are influenced by Teacher’s educational training and its ability to articulate and impact the subject to the Students.
