ABSTRACT
This study is titled a comparative analysis of Esan and English phonology. These two languages posses an organized sound system. The goal of this study is to reveal the uniqueness of each languages’ phonological system by carrying out a comparative study on both languages. The analysis employs a contrastive framework to identify similarities and differences between their phonological inventories. The motivation for this study is the need to determine the relatedness of English and Esan phonologies. The theoretical framework adopted for this study is the comparative method of analysis. The data for the study was collected with the use of the oral interview method; data were collected from native speakers using a wordlist of 15 random words; the qualitative research design was used for the study. Works of related literature were reviewed; and after a successful presentation of the data, analysis was carried out using the comparative method, the sound system and lexical item collected from Esan and English languages were compared. Furthermore, it delves into the role of tone in Esan, a feature that is not phonemic in English. After an effective analysis reveals the similarities and differences and how tone variations in Esan contribute to meaning distinction, contrasting with the stress-based system in English.
