ABSTRACT

The study investigated the Prevalence of Discrimination and Stigmatization of Physically Disabled Learners in a Special Public Primary School in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. Four research questions guided this study. The study adopted a case study research design. The population of the study was 75 special needs learners from a special primary school in Aduwawa, kpoba-okha local government area. The sample size is 55 learners selected through purposive sampling because of suitability of the characteristics of the population of the study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. That is made of section A and section B, section A contains sex, age; and section B contains 20 items 4 point likert scale items of strongly agree, Agree, Disagree and Strongly disagree. The instrument was validated by three experts in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counseling Psychology.The reliability was established using Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient, which yielded the of 0.84 and 0.82 for discrimination and stigmatization respectively. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentage and mean. The findings from the study revealed that the prevalence of discrimination is 85.82%, while for stigmatization is 89.82% among physically disabled learners in the target population; and these discriminations manifests across various forms, including the educational environment, interactions with staff, societal attitudes, and institutional policies. The findings revealed that the forms of discrimination experienced by physically disabled learners such as; verbal derogation, social exclusion, and barriers to accessing available resources for learning. The study also revealed that physically disabled learners experience discrimination from educational enviroment, society and non protective policy. The study therefore reommended that; Educational Institutions should implement comprehensive anti-discrimination policies that explicitly address the rights and needs of physically disabled learners; Provide disability awareness training for staff, learners, and parents to promote understanding and empathy towards disability and also; Government  and Policy makers should enforce existing laws and regulations that protect the rights of physically disabled individuals, including those related to education .
