24 HOURS URINE, SODIUM AND POTASSIUM EXCRETION COMPARED WITH BLOOD PRESSURE AMONG NORMOTENSIVE MALE AND FEMALE YOUNG ADULT WITH FAMILY HISTORY OF HYPERTENSION

ABSTRACT

Hypertension is a crucial issue among public discourse today because of its prevalence among middle aged and elderly persons in Nigeria. This research is aimed at examining the 24 hours urine, sodium and potassium excretion compared with blood pressure among normotensive male and female young adult with family history of hypertension. The research focused on male and female young adult with family history of hypertension to ascertain the sodium and potassium content in normotensive male and female Urine; and the effect of sodium and potassium intake in normotensive male and female blood pressure. A total of 23 male and 23 female was used for the study making a total of 46 respondents used for the study. The result showed thatthe PCV values for male and female are 39.09 and 35.91 respectively with a T-test value of  0.027 < 0.05 (5%)  level of significance, which show that that PCV result is significant. This is however same for BMI which had SEM values of values 22.17 ±0.51 and 23.15 ±0.80 for male and female respectively and having a T-Test value of 0.014 < 0.05 (5%) which shows that the BMI is significant. The SBP was seen to be significant with a T-Test value of 0.032 < 0.05 (5%) level of significance and a SEM values of 129.26 ±3.09 and 116.91 ±3.03 for male and female respectively. DBP also had a significance value of 0.06 which shows it is significant at 5% level of significance. MAP and Pulse pressure had were found not to be significant at 0.05 (5%) level of significant.   Urine volume, Urine flow rate, Urea, Na+, K+, Creatinine, were all not significant as they all had T-Test values 0.500, 0.500, 0.499, 0.299, 0.395 and 0.395  respectively which were above 0.05 (5%) level of significance.  The potassium Khad a T-Test value of 0.425 > 0.05 (5%) which shows that it is not significant. However, all the other parameters were all significant with Urea,     Na+ and Creatinine having T-values of  0.037, 0.009 and 0.078 respectively. The correlation result showed that all the parameters tested for all had non-statistically significant negative correlation with the total urine sodium and potassium. This was seen in the scattered plot that were not symmetrically arrange.
